Spring Clean Your Nervous System: Reset for Mind & Body

Have you been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or disconnected—even as the world around you comes alive this spring? You're not alone. At Paloma’s Serenity Counseling in Colorado, we specialize in helping individuals heal from chronic stress, anxiety, and trauma using gentle, evidence-based methods that support nervous system regulation and emotional well-being.

This spring, give yourself the gift of internal renewal. Just as we clean our homes and reorganize our spaces, it’s equally important to tend to what’s happening inside.

Understanding the Nervous System and Chronic Stress

Your nervous system is your body’s internal safety scanner. It determines whether you feel calm or on high alert. When we go through trauma or experience prolonged stress (even if it's subtle), our autonomic nervous system can become dysregulated.

Polyvagal Theory, developed by Dr. Stephen Porges, explains how the nervous system shifts between states like “fight or flight,” “freeze,” or “safe and connected.” You may notice these states in yourself:

  • Constant fatigue or restlessness

  • Trouble relaxing or falling asleep

  • Emotional numbness or reactivity

  • A sense of always being “on edge”

At Paloma’s Serenity Counseling, we help clients gently shift these patterns using trauma-informed therapy, somatic techniques, and nervous system education.

How Therapy Can Help You Reset This Spring

Here are four ways we support nervous system healing in our counseling sessions—and practices you can begin on your own:

1. Body-Based Grounding Techniques

We incorporate somatic therapy to help you release stored stress from the body. Simple movements like stretching, walking, or guided breathwork can begin the reset process.

2. Exploring Inner Parts with Compassion

Through Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy, we explore the different “parts” of you—like the overwhelmed caregiver, the perfectionist, or the part that shuts down. These parts aren’t bad—they’re trying to protect you. In therapy, we help them feel heard and supported.

3. Releasing Stored Trauma with Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a neuro-experiential therapy that uses fixed eye positions to access the subcortical brain, where trauma and stress are stored. Clients often find deep relief without needing to talk through every detail.

4. Tuning Into Nature as a Healing Resource

Spending time outdoors can gently stimulate the vagus nerve, which helps regulate mood, digestion, and heart rate. We often encourage mindful nature connection as part of trauma recovery.

A Personal Note from Barbara

As a trauma-informed counselor and a mother who has walked through grief and burnout, I know how hard it can be to slow down. I’ve seen firsthand—both personally and professionally—how powerful it is when we stop running and begin to listen to our bodies.

You don’t need to push through another season of stress. Healing is possible, and you don’t have to do it alone.
